28mm cars for Hue
Hello,
I was searching for cheap cars compatible with a Hue city terrain in 28mm. I finally choose 1/43 die cast classic American cars (Chevrolet Impala, Bel Air,...) that I will repaint with citrus-inspired colors (or flashy colors as they were at that time). And to contrast with such American imported mode, I have some Heller 1/43 Peugeot 203 and Citroën traction plastic kits that I will paint in dull or drab colors (the old times) and will do weathering a lot.
Siku Citroen traction and also Norev 3 inches 4 CV (painted as a taxi) are compatible.
Here are some pics for the moment:
I will do a break in my project this month but target to have the first city street portion finished end of September to show you the results "in context".
Regards,

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
That's interesting Richard. I find scale creep in diecast vehicles to be very hit and miss. For example, for my urban combat project ages ago, I bought some 1:43 diecast police cars and they look fine with 28mm figures. But then I found a whack of regular Maisto cars at the local Zellers and they were listed at 1:64 but looked fine with the 1:43 police cars. Go figure.....
Looking forward to seeing your progress on the Hue terrain.

Love the taxi. I enjoy any scenario when I can use mine in 20mm. Tet '68 in Saigon is good for that.

Sorry to resurrect this but I've been unavoidably AWOL for a while.....How did you do the rusted car? It's excellent.

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
Hello, Thank you. in fact it is not a old topic for me as I am still painting other cars for my diorama...but it takes time... So for the rusty car, it is a Peogeot 203 plastic kit from Heller (1/43). I diluted PVA glue then applied it on the kit. Then before it dried I let fall some fine sand and dry mud in powder (dust). I repeated several times. Then it was primed in black then in Burnt Sienna. I brushed with Vallejo 940 and 931 some areas. I diluted Humbrol black with White Spirit then applied that around the windows or where it is supposed to have burnt. Last step is some light grey spots over black area. It is my first try but I will use the same technic with other cars and tank wrecks.

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
I can just see me making a right mess of that. All of SWMBO's APCs/Tanks/CHoppers are Corgi so 1.43 cars would fit in fine. I'll maybe give it a shot. I don't paint at all and Pat does not paint vehicles, so it's an adventure....or something......

I will paint the Disney Cars Sal Machiani as a Lambretta in light blue. I have added some stowage with Lego, wooden bead, Playmobil and plastic bits. I have made a small bamboo cage with two small pieces of plasterboard scrim tape that are crossed and shaped. Ducks heads are made with copper wire deformed. It is WIP.

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
Hello,
So I finished my French old cars for Hue (Citroën Traction and Peugeot 203 - all plastic kit Heller in 1/43). The result is very rusted....I finally only choose black to contrast with imported American "classic" cars (all diecast in 1/43 too). But for them: impossible to find the good turquoise blue, as on many pictures of that time. So I choose a blue green from Vallejo color model. But it is too green. When you have not THE correct color, difficult to invent it...
So for the purists will be disappointed, the result is not historically accurate: my American cars are too rusted (as junkyard cars). If I had the money, I would have buy directly some diecast cars with the good color, like the Plymouth Savoy in blue or Ford Taunus 1957 (1/43) with light weathering. Another time maybe.
And the next cars to be painted: an old Peugeot 302 Michelin (to recall Michelin was very present in Vietnam during French), the South Vietnamese officials car (WIP) and a Citroën bus (long but was cheap...)
And of course the Norev 3 inches to do taxis...
So again some painting....

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
I collected additional cars to fill the streets of my future diorama. This is just for ideas. I have from top to bottom a 1/43 Berliet electric hearse (that I target to make disabled and drawn by funeral horses, beside my abandoned French cemetery vignette), a Japanese bus to paint in white and bleu and loaded by unlikely things, then a succession of other vehicles: a 1/50 Corgi truck to paint in yellow as a beer 33 Export delivery truck, a 1/43 Jeep bus from Manilla then two Coca Cola delivery trucks and a Siku Traction. I found these vehicles similar to what I can see on photos of that period.
Not shown is also a ERTL 1/43 Chevy Cab: big but we can see plenty of such trucks in Vietnam during the war.
And I thing that will be enough...looking for 28mm scooters, bikes and bicycles now.

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
Richard,
an amazing and period accurate bunch of vehicles. Lots of
those were seen not just in Hue but all over the larger cities
and towns in I Corps. Personally I loved the over loaded Lambretta and the street cart. Those were even seen in
some small villages. Brought back a lot of memories and
even those of some smells. Can't wait to see the beer
truck. Great job and thanks for sharing with us!

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
[quote="Richard MARQUIS"]Why ducks....This was a strange idea to do that but I needed to go to the end of it:
It's a shame that Disney Cars Sal Machiani is so rare now on eBay as it was common and cheap 1 year and half ago.... So it will be my single Lambretta.[quote="Richard MARQUIS"]

Re: 28mm cars for Hue
This is inspirational: I have been thinking of buying some buses and light trucks etc. recently. Happily there are plenty of diecasts available in 20 mm. I use a lot of Oxford 1:76th scale diecasts on my tabletops.
