Re: Favourite Vietnam helicopter ?
The Mojave is a really weird bird, that's for sure! Was inside one (non-flyable) and it had this unsettling feeling like being swallowed by a guppy!
I'm with Tom, I LOVE the OH-6. Most fun I've had on a helicopter ride!

Re: Favourite Vietnam helicopter ?
It has to be the Huey. I live fairly close to a Huey squadron airbase and periodically, before they switched over to newer helicopters they used to come thundering up my valley, making that distinctive sound. A friend once saw the whole squadron take off whilst driving past the base and they all came flying over the road.
PS My favourite Vietnam aircraft is the Skyhawk: when I was 10, there was an air show at the local airbase, and a Skyhawk did an early-morning wake-up call rooftop run over our house. We lived on an airport flight lane, so we were used to jets overhead but Holy mother-fucking Christ that was AWESOME!

Re: Favourite Vietnam helicopter ?
I'm with you there OTB, I LOVE the Skyhawk. My uncle was the Senior Chief of maintenance of VF-302 F-14 squadron at Miramar NAS and when I was a kid I spent a LOT of time up there (I have some good stories for another thread) and got to fly in a 2-seater A-4 that was used at the Top Gun school. They called them either "Scooters" or "Vipers" (depending if they were flying them or fighting them) and despite being much slower that the F-14s they were crazy maneuverable.
Of course, the Blue Angels flew them at that time too, so that may have pushed my love up a notch or 4!

I was a lucky kid, got to do all sort of stuff that would get people discharged or jailed nowadays. The 80's were a different time... (even once got to fire the 20mm of an F-14 on a static zeroing range. Scared the hell out of me! And then there was the ejection seat rocket motor test prank that knocked me unconscious...)

20 years ago I would have said the Cobra. 10 years ago I would have said the Slick. But lately I'd be leaning towards the H-34.
Funny how our tastes change over time.

Mine is the Huey. The Nam workhorse, followed closely by the OH-6.

Re: Favourite Vietnam helicopter ?
I'd like to say something more exotic, but it is the Huey for me.
I don't really understand why, but whenever I run into one at an airshow or military show, and hear and feel it flying overhead, it fills me with an sense of awe, hairs stand up on the back of my neck, my eyes will well. Weird.
Baseball, apple pie, and the Huey.

Very well said irishserb and I agree with that sentiment 100%!
