The Hill Fights : The First Battle of Khe Sanh by Edward F. Murphy
Book: The Hill Fights: The First Battle of Khe Sanh
Author: Edward F. Murphy
Summary:
This book covers the movement of the USMC into Khe Sanh in early 1966 and the build up to April of 1967 when they are heavily engaged with the NVA. The 2nd and 3rd battlions of the 3rd Marines find themselves up against a much larger force fighting for the hills overlooking the base at Khe Sanh. The fighting will continue through mid-May with heavy losses for both sides.
Thoughts:
This book has a lot of useful information about a topic you don't see too often. There's lots of first-hand accounts which will also give you plenty of useful insight. Sadly, a lot of marines died in this period due to bad intel, inexperience, and even equipment. This was right at the transition from the M14 to M16, and weapon jams really left them in a tight spot. Medical evacs often caused as many new casualties as the ones evacuated because of NVA mortars.
