50 Years Ago Today

I mentioned in another thread that Australia has now recovered the remains of every ANZAC MIA from the Vietnam war.

Here is a quick story about the loss and subsequent recovery of the last two MIA.

It was a clear, still night when Canberra Bomber A84-231, call sign 'Magpie 91', disappeared from radar while flying a typical night bombing mission near the Vietnamese Laotian border on the night of 3 November 1970.

Following a thorough search, Flying Officer Michael Herbert and Pilot Officer Robert Carver were declared Missing in Action.

Operation 'Magpie's Return', in 2009, resulted in the repatriation of the last two Australian Servicemen listed as Missing in Action in Vietnam.

Today is 50 years since the Canberra and it's crew went missing, we commemorate these and all veterans who served our country.

It's great that they have all been returned. I thought that there was an Aussie that went missing in Laos with SOG, but I may be mistaken, I'll have to have a looksie.
