irishserb's Terrain Thread
I'm finally turning out some terrain pieces for my Vietnam gaming, so figured I'd start a thread to share some pics. The initial bits are going to be pretty general in nature, just some jungle filler pieces, bamboo and foliage stands.
I'm not happy with the color of some of the foliage, so intend to eventually tweek some of these a bit. The figs are from Britannia, to give some sense of scale/size to the foliage. I have supplies on the way to add more, plus will be working on palm trees and rice paddies soon, hopefully making progress this weekend.
There are a couple more overview pics on my blog at:

I promise to share some more interesting stuff in the future.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Thanks guys.
I expect to go back and do some washes on some of the trunks and fronds, and then hit some of them with a flat coat. A lot of the palm/fern/cycads types that I've seen in person actually have a very smooth, sometimes sort of semi-gloss plastic kind of appearance, so I will probably be sort of selective about which ones get a flat coat and which ones don't.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
I have also noticed the semi-glossy look of much tropical foliage. Very convenient for me not to have to try to flatten all the jungle vegetation I have.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Got some palms and a few more jungle foliage stands done, here's a couple of pics:
Definitely need to put some wash on the trees, going to wait until I get some more terrain done and do it all at once. Rice paddies are up next, and still have road and trail section, bunkers, and some sort of stream sections to build.
Couple more pics on the website at:

Thanks for looking.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Finally got down the basement this weekend and made some progress on the rice paddies. Not done yet, but starting to take shape.
I don't have enough tufts to finish all eight sections, so it will be another month before I can get these done. Fortunately, I have about 300 other projects to work on in the mean time.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Those will give you a nice looking bunch of paddies. Looking forward to the finished product.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Thanks for the comments, guys.
Had a bit of a hiccup with them yesterday. I was sitting downstairs labelling 6mm infantry that I had painted up over the last week, with the rice paddies stacked near the edge of the table, awaiting a coat of gloss on the water and some flock, when one of our cats decided to visit.
Now that cat never comes down the basement, let alone messes with anything on the table, but sure enough, it jumped up onto the edge of the table, hit the stack of rice paddies, and running in space, proceeded to flip each one off the table scratching the foam or plastic bases on each, before running out of them and banging its head on the table top, as it disappeared over the edge of the table.
I sat there for a moment, nearly as stunned as the cat, before walking around to survey the damage. Yep, every piece is damaged. Got to fill, sand, repaint a little on every piece. Amazingly, non of the tufts of "rice" were torn off, but the water has some gouges in it.
Oh well, probbly won't see the cat down there again for awhile.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
It’s awful when something like that happens. Having to go back and fix the damage is a pain. At least from what you wrote it seems it is fixable. I hope so.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Got the rice paddies repaired and added some flock. I rushed it, so they came out kind of so-so. Need to go back and touch them up a bit.
Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
I would say they look great, not “so-so.”

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Indeed. They look as if they are designed for you to be able to have them all connected, or remove some. Is that so?

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
Thanks guys. I think this a case of they look better in photos than in person.
Darby, yes, they designed to be somewhat modular. There are two stand alone units and seven add on pieces to expand and rearrange the paddies. Here's a pic showing the paddies separated.

Re: irishserb's Terrain Thread
A nice arrangement - modularity always pays off.
