Getting a start on 15mm jungle
Up until now, I've only ever built jungle in 28mm. This is quite easy as most plastic plants are usually quite large and look big and overbearing for 28mm figures. I decided to get started on some jungle pieces scaled down heavily, for 15mm. This required a lot of smaller bushes and some excellent plastic palms from China on eBay, which were inspired by some of uglyfatbloke's work.
I have a pending shoulder surgery coming up on November 24th, so there's nothing quite like that looming, to get you motivated to get some stuff done knowing you'll be down to one arm in no time.
Here's the first few pieces using Litko's odd shaped plywood terrain bases. I like these because they butt up nicely against each other, or when you move them closer, create a trail you need to squeeze through. I don't like how the edges are looking on the pieces, so I'm looking at options (undergrowth, flock, etc) to finish them up.
But......it's a start.

Re: Getting a start on 15mm jungle
Just put the final touches on a 15mm Vietnamese hut for my project. This was a 3D print from WOW Buildings sized down to 20mm. We tried 15mm but that was too tiny. More appropriate for 10mm. For this I added "thatching" with jute string just to give it a rougher, more indigenous look. I'll be adding a base once the whole set is done and I decide what sizes I need.

Todd,
Have you sent this pic to Paul from Wow Buildings?
If not, is it okay for me too please? He loves to see his work printed and painted.

Todd,
Awesome work.
What was you painting process and colours used?
What is this "jute string" you used, it gives a great look.

Ken

Re: Getting a start on 15mm jungle
It's all looking fantastic, Todd! Those palms are great. I am redoing a lot of my terrain (or at least I plan to) and have been struggling with deciding if I want to go realistic for the jungle (trees that look like real specimens) or if I want to go with palm trees, which most people associate with jungle due to so many movies taking place on pacific islands.
(and then, of course, there's the part of I Corps that is pine forest...)

Re: Getting a start on 15mm jungle
Thanks gents!
@ Ken, no I don't have any kind of business relationship with WOW so that would have never crossed my mind. The jute string I speak of is like sisal string, available at most dollar/pound shops. I'll take pics later of the ball of it so you can see it in it's natural form. I cut it into small sections, wet it, peel the 3 strands apart and then iron them so they sit flat. I do this exercise in bulk so I always have a bunch ready to go in my hobby box in case I need it. Saves so much time. As for the paint, I undercoat in spray Vallejo "English Uniform Brown" then drybrush Vallejo Japanese Uniform Brown (for that golden yellow look) and then a final light drybrush of Vallejo Buff. This recipe comes compliments of Capt. Willard who used to post on FOF in our early days.

Paul is a good friend of mine so I did show it to him so do expect him to drop it on his Facebook page at some stage

That will be interesting to see and I will keep an eye out for it in our local dollar shops.

Nice, it was a great look and very life like having been to Vietnam and seen hootches like this up close.
Thanks Todd.

Yeah that's a tough one Darby and one I've heard alot since FOF's early days. Since most of the Hollywood depictions of Nam as heavily jungled palm terrain, and over the last decade, most wargamers posting photos online seem to go for that look, I think for me, that's what keeps me designing palm inspired terrain. The upside of palm tree terrain for wargaming, is the cost. Hands down. Cheapest way to do mucho amounts of terrain for your buck. The architectural model trees like those from JTT Trees are nice, but it can get costly quick. I think that was a deterrent for me to go that way.

Re: Getting a start on 15mm jungle
I've been working on some 15mm terrain lately, mainly forest for my Medieval Fantasy project, but managed to finally complete my jungle Buddha. The statue was a thrift store find ages ago (I remember thinking it rather suited 15mm size and style wise). The base is MDF from War Bases "pond" pack, covered with Miliput and then just as the Miliput was drying, rolled over with a texture roller with broken stone effect.
Flashpoint minis in the foreground for size. I'm quite happy with the sizing and result.

Re: Getting a start on 15mm jungle
Welcome aboard Goose!
Nah, I've been off the 15's for a bit in favour of a more simple project. After completing these, I put a boat load of effort into my 15mm forest terrain for a medieval project which was time consuming. After that, I paused on 15's for a while.
I'll be sure to add pics when I have more done.
