Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
This is a test posting of a photo on our new site. It is from a game I did a few of year ago. It is the rescue of an USAID nurse named Maggie O'Brien in Chau Phu during the '68 Tet offensive. The rescue was led by Special Forces soldier Drew Dix who received the Medal of Honor for her rescue and his rescue of virtually the whole city.
When I have time, I will do a more complete AAR.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
I am pretty sure they were Liberation. I think I had to add the .50s. I believe the gunners were also Liberation. Maybe the drivers too. Some of the figures I use in jeeps are SHQ.

Glad you liked the photo.

Love the shopfronts! All too often Vietnam tables are paddy fields and jungle; it's good to see some urban conflict

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Dr. X, those visible are kits. I will try to dig up the info as soon as I can, but don't hold your breath. I do know that the two with the open fronts I bought from Canada. The are by a British model railway company for a somewhat odd guage that is about 1/72 scale. I got them so long ago that I forget what the gauge is or the name of the company that makes them or the one I bought them from in Canada. I can probably recreate that info in time. There was some conversion done on them, but I do not remember what. I think it all may have been just to leave off the front wall in part.
The one just barely visible in the right, started out its life as a western frontier building for model railroads. It had a good bit of conversion and adding of shutters.
The gas station was a straight forward model for railroads. I think I did add some interior detail for room to room fighting. I did find a photo to support an Esso station sign in Vietnam at the time.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Darby, thanks. That photo was put up just mainly to see if I could really post photos here. It seemed to work okay. I would like to do a real AAR as it was a fun scenario. If plays pretty quickly. In fact the guys enjoyed it so much, we re-played it that same day.
I did some special rules for the house being occupied by MFVC while Maggie was in hiding. At least in River City, the MFVC were more interested in looking for things to steal in homes than they were in the occupants. This was true even in the district chief's residence. (Don't hold me to some of these details as I have read Dix's book twice, but it has been several years ago. I may have the title of the guy wrong when I said district chief.) At any rate, the MFVC may or may not find the occupants in hiding. I will try to post the rules too somewhere here. I play with FNG, of course, but I think these rules would fit with any rule system.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Tom - is that model RR company you are thinking of Dapol?
Funny you mention the Esso gas station. I did the same research as you and have been looking for one.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
That's a double 0 kit. Those work with 20mm? I thought 0 and 00 work better with 28's.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
I think they work pretty well with 20s. Better than HO. But the gas tationthere I think is HO, not sure.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Yeah I wondered about HO and 20mm. Especially with LibMins as they're a bit....um..."chunkier".

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
In theory British O Gauge is 1/43(.5?) and OO gauge is 1/76. So OO should be a decent match for 20mm.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
OO is pretty good for 20mm and way too small for 28s. When we moved over to 28s we had to replace pretty much all our buildings too. British O gauge is a buit big for 28s , hard to come by and very expensive.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Actually, if I remember correctly, the Dapol box or something says 0/00. They may be in between.

A lot of Dapol kits are the old Airfix ones re-branded.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Checked the packaging, says OO/HO Scale...so as to actual scale who knows, if it looks good, use it.

Re: Rescue of Maggie O'Brien
Just so. We have a couple of old Plasticville buildings that are great with 28mm.
