What scale or scales do you play Nam in?
What scales do you game in?
Buckle up gents, I've posted our first poll! Multiple choice is allowed.

20mm for this guy. It's the only period I do in 20mm now though. The other periods I'm going have gone to 28mm. A lot of tempting 28mm for Vietnam out there now though.

6mm for air battles, and 15mm for land/riverine. Along with the PBRs, I also have an ATC from Gomi. They make me realize that 15mm is probably not practical for doing riverine actions. I've thought about buying some 6mm ships from GHQ, but am afriad that I would wind up doing the subject in multiple scales. That's something I've always tried to avoid.

20mm. The figures are big enough to tell what weapon the guy has, yet they don't take up so much room. There is so much reasonably priced air and armor available.
And also I now have over 500 painted figures with several dozen vehicles, beacoup buildings, bunkers, etc. Too late to change even if I wanted to. Which I don't.

New Scale?
So first off I would have said 20mm - old Platoon20, I think ceased production. But then I did a really nice range of 1/72 that I sold and sadly vanished.
Well then everyone's into 28 and I jump on that bandwagon. Again nice figures and, unusually, still available but I sold all the vehicles and they're not re-released, yet.
Well I sort of want to dip my toe again - almost back to the start. Who knows what the summer will bring?
John.

Re: What scales do you game in?
Yeah, I've been on that ship more than I care to count. Hence why I now own Nam in 3 scales!!
Welcome back to the forums John. Don't forget to say a proper hello in the "Check Your Gear" thread. Say...... do you need your username shortened like Darby? Or was that on purpose?

Re: What scales do you game in?
I have a huge 20mm collection, but don't use it anymore after switching to 15s.
Also put 6mm, but really it's 3mm or 1/600 (both ground and air).

Yes, Todd. I have been surprised. Near the end on the previous version of FoF, I felt much like the Lone Ranger.

Re: What scales do you game in?
The revival of this group is starting to get me moving towards dusting off my 20mm Nam collection and start doing some gaming.

Atta boy!
I completely understand Tom. 28's are pretty big now especially with all the new shiny toys in that scale from folks like Empress and Gringo.
Obviously airbubbles (Rolf) games in 20mm and alcal used to be big into that scale. Though I think he mentioned in a recent post, he's moved up to 28's.

all depends on your table space for which scale doesnt it ..

Re: What scales do you game in?
True. But for guys like me with a small place, a Kill Team sized mat on a coffee table is decent enough for skirmish in 28mm. Even better for smaller scales.

Re: What scales do you game in?
My 28mm collection for World War Two has grown a lot and my American War of Independence is growing/getting started. Vietnam at 20mm gives the possibility of helicopters more. That's why I stuck with doing modern in 20mm too. 28mm is definitely easier to paint. LOL!

Re: What scales do you game in?
Yes, for me it is the availability of buildings, aircraft and vehicles that got me into and keeps me in 20mm. Playing area is not a concern as my present table is 15’ x 7’. I never use all of that for Vietnam or even ACW or WWII. Just my 15mm Napoleonics and my 28mm Sioux Wars ever need that much room.
I also like my aircraft on flight stands that get them up to probably two feet above the table. 28mm aircraft that high up sure become top heavy.
I do convoy ambush games. A dozen 28mm vehicles on a road, with room between them and some road ahead of them for movement, eat up a lot of room.
As time goes on, more and more is becoming available in 28s which is great. And some of the 20mm stuff like the great Monolith Designs hooches, are disappearing.

Lucky bugger! Trouble with tables that size is you feel the need to make more terrain. I don't have that issue on a Kill Team size play area (22" x 30").

Yes, this is true. Even Frontline Wargaming used to make huts and firebase elements in 20mm, but they're no longer on their website so I'm assuming they weren't big sellers. I did get one of the hootches back in 2001 to review, but it wasn't all that great. Especially when compared to the Monolith ones.

Re: What scales do you game in?
For me, 20 mm offers the largest variety of figures, vehicles, aircraft, etc. Plus I can visualise how stuff fits together in 20 mm when it comes to scratch-building things, so it's just what I am used to.

Re: What scales do you game in?
Wow! There's a higher number of 28mm folks than originally thought.

Re: What scales do you game in?
15mm and 6mm for me as I prefer the larger tactical games, so 15mm for company +/- and 6mm for up to brigade but definitely battalion +/- size games.
Terrain isn't an issue for me as I tend to print most of my vehicles and all my buildings and accessories, print in once size, re-scale and print in the next. Some of the smaller stuff does not print on FDM printers so I then fall back on resin printing.

Re: What scales do you game in?
In the past I've used 20mm. The range of aircraft and vehicle kits is unparalleled in 1/72 scale. You want it, someone makes it.
More recently, based on the Excellent Empress figures that have come out, I've upgraded to 28mm. Objectively, the figures on the table look much better in 28mm, and gaming (for me) is all about the visual experience. But with 28mm, I can't get more than 2 platoons on the table before it starts looking like Oxford Street on a Saturday morning (pre-Covid).

Re: What scales do you game in?
I had all the figures of the FAA brand in 20mm ( the best 20mm Nam minis for me!) unfortunately disappeared. I had the foolishness to resell them several years ago.
When I returned to the world of the Vietnam wargaming I chose to focus on 28mm with the minis from FOA TAG and Baker. Today this range is further enriched with brands like Empress, Gringo and Full miniatures ...
I take more pleasure in painting these figurines which in my opinion have more details than those that can be found in 20mm currently.(It’s just my opinion!)
Now I wait just more gun, more trucks and more vehicles in 1/56 scale!

Re: What scales do you game in?
I was 20mm for a long time.
After coming back to Vietnam gaming, like others mentioned above. I love all the new options in 28mm so picked that route. Now the struggle for Helo's is becoming real...
