Here is my latest painting effort. Painted with GWs contrast paints. The figures are from Empress Miniatures sculpted by Paul Hicks. A lovely little viginette.

Here is the first part of the mortar team moving the mortar to a new emplacement. The figure is humping the base plate and tube of the mortar.

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
Really nice modelling of the mortar being fired and carried. I guess the other poor devil has the bipod and ammo. I think this is the M2 60mm mortar, which was getting old by the time of VN but still outclassed many contemporaries.
Thanks for showing

Yes you are right. The second crew figure moves ammo and bipod. He is on my painting table at the moment

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
After a longer brake from modeling and painting. I could start a new project over the x-mas holidays. A LVPT5. The model was printed on my resin printer in 1/50 scale. The figures are from Empress.
Here is the printed model:
And a picture of the finished model before painting. The sandbags are made from green stuff, the c ration boxes, bags and ammo boxes are resin prints.
And the vehicle with added basecolors.
The miniatures will be painted with GWs contrast paints the rest will be done the traditional way….
Many more pictures at https://wargamesgazette.com/2022/01/16/the-start-of-my-lvpt5/

Wow, I thought 3D printing meant rows upon rows of laminations. This is superb work.
Is that primer form Vallejo OD sprays?

The quality of the printing in resin is impressive. The details of the stowage too. I like the cooler. This is very top. This is a very cool project. Just by curiosity, what is the name/reference of the printer you are using?

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
Well that's a damn sight better quality print than the FDM monster I ended up with.
Only thing I'd be tempted to add would be the grab handle/tie-down rails around the top edges.

I printed the beast on an Anycubic photon and it is the biggest model I could fit to the printbed.

Awesome job, Tom!
Knowing the size of this beast, I doubted it would ever
see the light of day on a gaming table. Unbelievable print
job and with the Marines riding on top with stowage and sandbags. Again, so glad
to see the LVTP5 finally arrive. Thanks for sharing this
masterpiece with us.

Beautiful work. If doing 3D printing, resin is definitely the way to do it.

Resin is best for miniatures and vehicles. Building can be done in FDM

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
As I was kicked out of the build something contest I can show you some more pictures. These are two terrain pieces roughly 40x80cm big. They fit against each other to form a 80x80cm terrain piece.
The Sandbags and other parafrenalia are 3d printed on a resin printer. The rest is scratchbuild. The roofs of the bunkers can be lifted up to place miniatures inside.
Many more pictures over on : https://wargamesgazette.com/2022/04/11/a-firebase-somewere-in-vietnam/

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
Tom,
This is truly outstanding. Had to be a lot of work. One
question, what did you use to cut out the trenches and
depressions in the pink foam board?
Again, this is one nice piece of work. Congrats.

Beautiful. How many of the sandbags were DAS rather than 3D printed?

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
I used two boards of foam one was 1cm thick the other 2cm. I cut the trenches into the 2cm thick board . Right through the complete material and glued the 1cm piece to the bottom of the 2cm piece. The tool I used was the proxon cutting table.
I think I made more DAS sandbags Then I used 3D printed ones. But the 3D printed ones were a real help to build up hight quicker.

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
Very, very nice! I would have thought that creating the sandbags via 3-D printing would actually be harder/more time consuming than just physically creating them with a putty or something. In any event, they and the rest of the model looks fantastic.
Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
Thanks for the info Tom!
Have had the idea of making a small platoon position, but
not nearly with the detail of your masterpiece. Again,
that was an incredible job.

Re: Tomrommel1's Vietnam War project
This time it took quite long until I could find time to write this post. That doesn’t mean that I did no modeling or painting in the meantime. I just couldn’t find the time to take pictures of the finished projects.
So here is the first finished project I had time to take pictures of. The 3D printed LVPT5. I printed the vehicle on my resin printer. You can find out more here: https://wargamesgazette.com/2022/01/16/the-start-of-my-lvpt5/
So here it is in all its glory. The crew is by Empress Miniatures.

Great looking beastie you have there! I'd hate to be that M60 gunner, anyone operating a skymount must have felt so exposed.
Oh give me a hoooome where the NVA roam, and the air support is stacked up all daaaaaay
