There have ben other articles about this mystery, and his return to Nam seems to point to the whole blackmarket/diamond thing. The CIA was running diamonds and sapphires (as well as drugs) though Vietnam to raise grey money. My bet is that he went back to do "one last score". He was offed as either a loose end or maybe had turned as a gov witness for immunity. Regardless, my money is on him having been whacked in that hotel room.

It's a Bedford Dormobile - it's surprising how many British cars there were in SV.
Yes, killed in the hotel room is a likely possibility. It's definitely strange that he was a Spec-4 in his mid-40s too...
