Re: Latest Book Received
OTB,
I think you will find it a good read. I have only read three
fictional Vietnam War books. Sand in the Wind by Robert
Roth, Fields of Fire and Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes.
All three were great, but Sand in the Wind was the
best of the three.
Enjoy Reading!

I've started it already and it's REALLY good. Right from the opening page, it gets your attention. I'll have to track down "Sands In The Wind" too. I read Matterhorn and couldn't put it down.

Re: Latest Book Received
So I'm in a local charity store today, browsing the shelves, and the word "Nam" leaps out at me...
What's this?
I flip it over: OMG it's a LOVE STORY!!!
"Get out your hankies ladies!" was my initial reaction, but there does seem to be some combat action in it too. It is also around 500 pages long and is just Part 1 of the story: there is a sequel called "The Nam Shadow". So we're talking about 1,000 pages here...
I dipped into it over lunch: the opening chapter is a firefight but then it backtracks to a town down the road from here in 1964 which, frankly, was about as exciting as hand-washing woolen socks. It looks like I have found my very own local equivalent of Danielle Steel's "Message from Nam", but twice as long.

"...the hardest thing he would ever have to live with. He was wrong." - if this is referring to the love interest then it doesn't bode well for this romance!!

Geezus..... can these authors NOT take a page from Danielle Steele? Nam doesn't need romance. Tour of Duty took care of that when they re-branded it Melrose Firebase thank you very much!

Latest finds in Wellington:
Part 2 of the aviation magazine special on Vietnam War aircraft.
A study of Henry Cabot Lodge's role as US Ambassador to South Vietnam:
And a front-line memoir:
The author got himself re-enlisted after being discharged as medically unfit because he wanted to serve in Vietnam. His girlfriend around this time in his life was in the anti-war movement - what might be expected did not happen: they ended up marrying and stayed together. This copy was signed by them:

Yes, Alnewhaven. He was the one who brought it up originally in my "8 Villagers to Christmas" thread. So he deserves it more than anyone.

I thought he already had a copy and was going to review it - he can't have 2; that wouldn't be fair - so much goodness needs to be spread around

I finished it recently - a great book! It's like the Zen drinker's guide to the Vietnam War.

Re: Latest Book Received
A birthday present to myself, just arrived from Stateside:
I've started on this one already. Lots of good granular detail. Now I know the call signs the Saigon MP jeep patrols used, and he mentions that Company D of the 716th, formed in January 1967 in Saigon, featured lots of guys who did combat duty out in the boonies in their first tours of duty and then transferred to the MPs, including veteran airborne guys... Interestingly, the author joined the MPs in 1964, volunteered for Vietnam, then reupped so he could go airborne, did a tour with the 187th, and then became a MACV advisor. This is just the first of his memoirs.
This one looks a hoot - the author has a long career in law enforcement and is a martial arts expert. I'm expecting lots of bone-crunching action in this one...
A Long Binh MP's memoir; reference for a future novel.
And a general history of the MP units in Vietnam - lots of organisational info and accounts of combat experiences.

Man, you've got a whole slew of good stuff there. It'll be interesting to know just how much of what the MPs has to deal with was drunk GIs.

Re: Latest Book Received
Recently at a Dr. appt. met another Vietnam Vet who was
with the MP company of the 25th ID. He was up in I Corps with us(Marines), but was sent South to Saigon just before Tet
started. We didn't get to talk much, but he said everybody
sure welcomed their Ma Deuce and mg jeep portees. I think
history has sort of shorted the MPs contributions to enforcing
curfews, off limits locations. Having evaded them from time
to time. They made a lot more contributions other than
chasing down us "would be" miscreants. I sincerely hope the books
do them justice.
please let us know your opinions of the books.
