Re: OTB's Stuff
Really neat stuff, OTB.
I love the the Popular Forces platoon. Shoulder patched are cool and nice shading/highlighting.

Re: OTB's Stuff
This has just arrived at my local dealer's - too much? My feeling is you can never have enough tabletop air support...

There is a scenario involving both a Popular Forces platoon and a B52 in Once A Warrior King. It would be worth it just to see the look on my wargaming buddy's face.
But if I got a B52. it would be wasted unless I used it up North, in which case I would also have to get some of these: https://henk.fox3000.com/gran/7208/00.jpg

Re: OTB's Stuff
That would be a quick game!!
Turn 1a: Deploy enemy forces.
Turn 1b: Use a string to hold the B-52 a couple of inches from the ceiling. Cover map with bomb craters.
Turn 2a: Remove enemy forces.
Turn 2b: Carefully lower B-52 from the ceiling.
Turn 3-25: Discuss scenario ideas for the next game.
Turn 26: SOG team enters corner area and assesses damage.

Re: OTB's Stuff
Oooo, then you could use a fog machine to make the cratered table top even more lifelike, and then make the NVA super mad and aggressive and it can be a real "run for your life Charlie Brown" mission for the team!
Oh give me a hoooome where the NVA roam, and the air support is stacked up all daaaaaay

Re: OTB's Stuff
Coincidentally, the real thing is coming my way this Saturday:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/travel/destinations/nz/wellington/124226734/big-american-bomber-set-to-buzz-wairarapa-airshow
I can't find any news about its precise flight path, but there is a good chance I will see it flying there and/or back assuming it is flying down from Guam.
I've had some good aircraft spotting recently - a Vampire jet, a Pilatus Porter, and what looked like a civilian version of the Kiowa have all passed overhead in the last couple of weeks.

Re: OTB's Stuff
A little mock-up for the forthcoming battle of Ap Bac:
Orion Early War ARVN, Roco Minitanks M113s, Hät US tank riders, and a diecast flying banana, along with some paddy berms I am in the middle of making more of as it is going to be a big table..
The 5 early war M113s were originally purchased and painted in 1988, and are the oldest Vietnam War vehicles I have. I recently added the tank riders to them and touched them up a bit.

Re: OTB's Stuff
VNAF Skyraider with 1962-3 markings, ready for the battle of Ap Bac:
This is a vintage Fujimi kit from the early 1970s - bare basic construction, well suited for wargaming, although a bit of cutting, sanding and filling work is required as the model is designed to be displayed with its undercarriage down.
These jungle stripe markings were used 1962-63 - I ended up hand-painting these.
I also have an Airfix Skyraider, which is even older, dating from the late 1960s: I'll be making that up as a USN aircraft from Dieter Dengler's squadron.

Re: OTB's Stuff
Pretty rad markings there! I hope you're VC have been doing some time on the firing range so they can take out all of those APC commanders. The more Shawnees they can down and the more .50s that can go silent the better off they'll be!
(Why teh heck am I taking the VCs side here?!?!)

Re: OTB's Stuff
The APC suppression rules are going to get some use, given the VC had no RPGs, and that Skyraider is going to have to be the subject of a die roll to stop it from repeatedly bombing Ap Bac's empty hooches rather than the VC positions on its outskirts.

Re: OTB's Stuff
Two building conversions
The first was chopped off the end of a 2nd-hand model railway station that was being sold cheap at a local model shop: I thought it would make a good gate house or toll gate:
The second was a driveway light that died. Too good to throw out...
I quite liked the idea of having a building with a skylight and this is what it turned out as:

Re: OTB's Stuff
I finally had time to go through this complete thread, and I am just in awe. I can't find adjectives big enough to express my thoughts. Amazing redefined.
Re: OTB's Stuff
Thanks I spent a long time away from Vietnam wargaming, but now it seems to have come back into my life with a vengeance.

Re: OTB's Stuff
Yes, I now have 3 companies of ARVN (1 early war, 1 late war, plus a mixed company with a platoon of Rangers and 2 platoons of late war ARVN that I am thinking of repainting either as Rangers or as paratroopers etc.). And the Popular Forces platoon, with a Regional Forces company currently being painted. I think that should be enough.
